What cause procrastination and how to avoid it?

As procrastination is so normal in people’s life, I want to know what cause it. The definition of procrastination is “tendency to put off or completely avoid an activity under one’s control” (Tuckman,1991, p. 474). It seems strange that people choose to delay things that they have ability to do.

At first, I simply own procrastination to laziness. After learning psychology, I know the process that I analyze the cause of procrastination is illogical. This is because the study of psychology should be scientific and empirical. I just simply connect laziness with procrastination for some presentation of them are similar.

Judging from presentation make me overlook many important underlay differences. In addition, diverse factors may lead to similar presentation. The result I get may even be false. This essay I will search some factors that cause procrastination and try to find solution of them.

The negative emotional consequences may lead people to procrastinate. According to the law of effect which is putted forward by Thorndike (1912), animals tend to take actions to protect themselves. It is the same to people. In addition, negative emotional consequences are included in unpleasant consequence.

However, the situation in human society are more complicated. There are things that people have to deal with whatever how painful it is to them. Therefore, People may prevent them from negative emotional consequences by procrastination.

Perfectionism may be a reason for procrastination. When people have so strong need for perfection, “the idea of starting something or trying to achieve a goal is tormenting” (Hamacheck, 1978, p. 32). This is because when people pursue perfection, they will elevate the requirement for most part of their work.

As perfection is not easy to gain, the task will take them more time to complete. There will be differences between imagination and reality. When tasks are beyond one’s ability and that person is not determined and toughed enough, procrastination is a more comfortable choice.

Wrongly estimating one’s ability might become a factor of procrastination. This is because inappropriate recognitions influence the design of working plan. If ability that people think they have is much higher than it really be, the function of working plan that organize time to help promote efficiency will not work.

When task in everyday seems impossible to finish and the unfinished part of task will accumulate to the next day. Following the plan become harder and harder. At this time, there are two choices, revising plan or give up working and just procrastinate.

There are several solutions to tackle these problems. The most essential is learn to assess the importance of every task. Considering what will happen if we procrastinate this task and what is the result if we don’t finish this task before deadline. For instance, if procrastinate doing sports at night, then I need to put off the time of taking a shower and go to bed.

What’s worse, if I have a lesson in 8:30am next morning, my procrastination might even affect my mental state in the class. By analyzing like this, we will clearly know which task can be delayed and which one cannot. I think people should analyze results when they are calm enough.

In addition, when finish a part of task, try to give oneself a little prize. Sometimes I have difficulty in laying my mobile phone down as playing games are more interesting than just trying to put down the point from textbooks. I know if I spend more time studying, I might have a better grade.

However, the grade is so far from me that I will only get this reward in the end of the term. In contrast, the relaxation brought by playing games are closer to me. If we connect attractive prize to tasks, we may be willing to start working immediately. And this action would also decrease the negative emotional consequence.

Psychology lessons taught me the diverse relationship between organism’s physical state, mental state organism’s physical state, mental state, and external environment” (Carole and Carol 2012, p.12). I believe through the following studying I will learn to analyze psychology phenomenon more accurately.
