Why
soccer should replace maths

Fellow students, I
stand here at this place, at this day, and at this hour. Dear
friends, how many math tests have you failed? How much time have you
spent doing math homework, that you could have spent with meeting
friends and playing on your gaming console? And how often did you
have detention because of not understanding math class and instead
talking to your friends? Well, I can tell you this is not your fault,
math is taught in ways that just cant be fun, even if you work hard,
you will fail. Math is there for you to fail and not to succeed. But
for what do we need math? Trigonometry, algebra, etc. when has anyone
ever used that, and for what. No one would say “let us take a
picture of a rectangular house and find the area of it, or cut it up
into triangles and find the different angles and bearings.” Did you
ever get embarrassed in front of your whole class because you didn’t
know the answer? It happened to me a thousand times.
But we as a group
can change that. If we will have soccer instead everyone would be
more active, less obesity, and the most important, we would have fun.
Also every month there will be a quiz about soccer and its
surroundings. The clever and not so clever people could be made equal
through this. In soccer you have to use your mind as well. For
example when taking a free kick the person has to think about the air
how strong it is, where he will aim, what power he needs to put into
the kick. Also after games everyone could write a little about who
was the best player, who made the most improvements and who could
still improve their skills.
At the end of the
year awards will be given out to the top three best players, to the
best improver, and to the most valuable player. These awards would
give people ambition to achieve the awards. Team spirit will be
needed, which means people will get to know each other better, so
they know more about each other and what the other people like to do.
The school will provide Nike and Adidas shoes for free and also the
shirts, shorts and shin savers. This works because Nike and Adidas
sponsors us, and on our school logo there will be a Nike and Adidas
logo. Also the five best players in our school will be aloud in a
Nike or Adidas advertisement with big stars like Ronaldo, Bale and
Messi. And they get paid. The math teachers will be the future
referees, because they are good at measuring angles and distance with
distance= velocity x time. The English teachers will be the game
commentators because they are good at talking using emotive words to
bind the watchers to the game. Also there will be costs for watching
the games. In my old school math was the main subject. We had math
tests every day! I don’t believe that you would go there without
wanting to be a mathematician. For one or two weeks I could
understand the teachers but after that I just got mad, I talked to my
friends and asked them if they can help me persuade the teacher that
it’s a stupid learning technique, but they left me alone.
I am happy that I
have friends like you and not like in my old school so I am sure you
as a community can change this school. I also heard the director talk
to the math teachers about more homework and harder tests, plus
harder grading. I don’t believe anyone wants this, but we as a
community can change this! Or do you want to have harder homework,
harder tests and harder grading? 67% of the school play soccer,
either at a club, or just for fun! What if we were to be the
sportiest international school in the whole world? Probably everyone
would look up to us, but if we were the best math school everyone
would laugh at us because that is life. We will fight for this
change, we will take risks for this change and most importantly we
will become a community through this change! If we achieve this, we
can be proud of ourselves. But one thing is for sure, this change
will not happen without you.
