Great Inventions

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to welcome you to my presentation  on the topic „Great inventions which changed the world“.

The following inventions I would like to mention here are milestones along the way between yesterday and today.

To begin with I would like to give you a definition of the word “invention”.

An invention is a unique device, method or process that often extends the boundaries of human knowledge, experience or capability.

The invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the year 1450 is widely regarded as the most influential event of the modern era (= Zeitalter).

This device increased the speed with which books could be made and led to the widespread distribution of knowledge for the first time in history. Gutenberg united several existing technologies – namely writing, ink and paper – with movable type printing and so a wider access to the Bible was possible.

Moreover ideas could be spread cheaply and a greater literacy (=Fähigkeit zu lessen und zu schreiben) was encouraged. In 1620 Francis Bacon, the English philosopher, wrote that printing was one of the inventions that “changed the whole face and state of the world.”

The second revolutionary invention I would like to mention is the telephone , a device which was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1876. “Mr.Watson. Come here. I want to see you.” These were the first words said over a telephone and they were spoken by Mr.Bell to Thomas Watson, his assistant.

“The day will come when the man at the telephone will be able to see the distant person to whom he is speaking,” Bell predicted (=vorhersagen) before he died. His vision has come true by today’s smartphones which offer all kinds of apps, GPS navigation, cameras, touchscreens, web browsers and payment systems.

Last but not least the invention of the piano in the year 1705 completes my list of great inventions in the history of mankind.  The piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori. The word piano is a shortened form of pianoforte, the Italian word for the instrument. .

Much of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin and Ravel was written for the instrument as it evolved (=sich entwickeln). The piano has been widely used in classical and jazz music and stars such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elton John and Billy Joel have introduced the piano to new audiences.

I hope I could give you a short overview of some of the main milestones in the history of mankind. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
