“The UN only works for the interests of developed countries.”

Write a so-called “support or criticism” comment. Either you support the statement or you criticize it. You have to decide which side you take.

Write between 250 and 350 words.

I do not think that the UN works only for the interests of the developed countries. Of course there have been many incidents that confirm this, but not all of them. In Liberia, soldiers were celebrated as sung heroes not only because they made it possible for Charles Taylor to return to power, but also because they helped Liberians elect a female president, putting an end to years of civil war and anarchy.

While many representatives perceived a mixed record of the World Organization's performance in terms of peacekeeping mission, the peacekeepers disagreed at all. David Harland, a senior official of the Peacekeeping Operations Department, described the end of the UN mission in East Timor as "a great success" and the departure of UN troops from Sierra Lione as a "historic event".

After helping over 200,000 people who had fled violence to West Timor to return, the UN planned to successfully complete the operation after 6 years of humanitarian operations on the island. After 6 years of peacekeeping, the UN ended the mission in Sierra Lione and put an end to the vicious circle of civil war.

They now held the balance for democratic elections. The UN troops are currently deployed in 17 countries around the world with more than 80,000 employees, including soldiers, police and civilians. Operations have increased rapidly; there were more peace operations in the first 5 years of the 90s than in the previous 45 years.

The official government of the UN admits the incident in July to what could have led to civil accidents, but defends its action further. Harland says that Haiti is problematic and an unsuccessful state that everything has got out of hand. The Haitian temporary government replaced President Jean, who had been elected by the people, and the UN forces tried to deal militarily with the opposition activists who were branded gangsters.

UN officials justify the military actions against the rebels because they are supposed to abide by the Security Council ruling which the temporary government also considers legitimate. The members of the Security Council support the government because they are cooperating with us, Harland said. When asked to see the soldiers as neutral, he said that neutrality was not the top priority that was essen.....[Volltext lesen]

Drugs

Avoid any involvement with drugs – the penalties are severe and could include the death penalty.

Don’t carry parcels or luggage though customs for other people.

Dear Susan,

How are you? I hope fine. Today I’ve got the leaflet about South Africa. It says what I need for vaccinations, perhaps an extra health precaution for malaria or a copy for prescribed medications. Also the passport must have to be up to date. You’ll have to watch out for your luggage and don’t take anything from other persons because of drugs.

So I have to go to my GP for vaccinations, there I will let get me the extra health precautions. My passport is up to date so I don’t have to do that. Also I don’t have to take any medication which is prescribed. I will be carefully and will check my luggage for drugs so nothing can happen. I’m looking forward to see you soon and .....

Here’s your recipe for pan-cooked apple crumble:

Ingredients: 125 g flour, 2 tablespoons grated lemon rind, pinch of salt, 90 g chilled butter, 60 g brown sugar, 5 apples, 1 tablespoon golden syrup.

After that step I will put the apples on a plate and keep them warm. I will wipe the pan clean and then I will set it over a medium heat. I will add the crumble and cook it for 5 minutes until golden but without stirring. I will put the apples into 4 bowls with a spoon and Jack will top it with crumble. Now I can serve the dessert.”

For an extra crunch I will add, before cooking, some chopped walnuts to the crumble mixture.
