Why embark on a journey of self-discovery as a youth? – Analysis

The online article “Why embark on a journey of self-discovery as a youth?” written by Kelly Weiss published on the 17th of May 2012 by “Sacred Earth Journeys”, a travel company which provides opportunities for self-discovery by visiting different unique and sacred places, is about the importance of discovering who you truly are as a teenager.

The author especially wants to convince the teenagers´ parents of how important it is for their children to find themselves. Moreover, it is her intention to promote the “Sacred Earth Journeys” company by supporting their personal growth and transformational programs.

In the first paragraph, the author points out that she believes that “our 20s and 30s” (l.4) would be “very different” (l.5) if everyone had the “opportunity to start discovering who we truly were when we were teenagers”. (l.1f.)

The text is characterized by rhetorical questions. By using this rhetorical device, the author encourages the readers to think about her point of view. This is reinforced by using the word “we”, which makes the reader feel directly concerned.

In the following paragraph the author also uses a rhetorical question to catch the readers attention. (“Did you have a mentor in your life?” (l.8)) Besides, she talks about her personal experience of ignoring her parents` good advice and clarifies that it sometimes “takes a third party for this message to stick”. (l.13) Maybe some parents can identify with this personal experience, so they conclude that it might be a good idea for their children to participate in a personal growth program.

In the last paragraph, the author informs about the benefits of “personal growth and transformational programs” (l.20) for young people, such as discovering themselves, preventing them from “inevitable pain” (l.27) and teaching them important skills for life. In the end of the text, the author encourages the parents to “play part in changing their lives for the better”. (l.30f)

Through all these positive aspects the parents feel vindicated that it is the right decision to let their children attend these programs.

In conclusion, through using stylistic devices such as rhetorical questions or telling of her personal experiences the author convinces parents of the importance for young people to discover themselves. Simultaneously, she promotes the company she is working for through pointing out the benefits of taking part in a “Sacred Earth Journey”.
