Max Heiser, a coach of female gymnasts, had the idea of a new bodiless game in winter 1915/16. He invited young female gymnasts and workers from the Siemens-Factories in Berlin to try out his invention named “Torball”.
The women had to be physically fit for their work in the factories while replacing the men who were still at the domestic front.
The rules were quite simple:
two goals 2 by 2 meters
a semicircle in front of the goals where you are not allowed to be inside while throwing the ball into the goals (like hockey)
without any body contact what means that the opponent had to be forced to lose the ball or you had to intercept (the trajectory -Flugbahn)
First the girls had to play with a solid “Faustball” which changed soon into a hollow “Hohlball” so they could bounce the ball.
Handball can be played in halls and outside and until hall handball became famous, it was often played on soccer fields with the soccer goals.
In the evening of the October 29th 1917 the official rules for the game now called handball were laid down and the first official game was played on December 2nd 1917. Two years later duels and body contacts were allowed so the game became more attractive for men.
The first German champion was the TSV Spandau 1921 in field handball.
In the period from 1922 to 1933, the German handball championships were held in parallel by two different associations (German sports authority and German gymnastics), so that there were two German champions for each year.
The first international handball match took place on 13th September 1925 in Halle an der Saale between the men's teams of Germany and Austria.
Jump off, catch and throw ball in flight - Goal: Bernhard Kempa premiered his trick on March 24th 1954 in an unofficial international match between Germany and Sweden (10:10) in the Schwarzwaldhalle in Karlsruhe.
Kempa has not only written a great deal of handball history with the invention of his legendary tricks, he also won many championship titles as a player and coach - and was one of the best players both in the field and in the hall. Kempa played 31 international matches (131 goals) and led the team of the Federal Republic of Germany in the years 1952 and 1955 to two world titles on the field.
In the summer of 2017 he died at the age of 96 years. (And missed the 100 years of handb.....
