Max Heiser, a coach of female gymnasts, had the idea of a new bodiless game in winter 1915/16. He invited young female gymnasts and workers from the Siemens-Factories in Berlin to try out his invention named “Torball”. The women had to be physically fit for their work in the factories while replacing the men who were still at the domestic front.
The rules were quite simple:
two goals 2 by 2 meters
a semicircle in front of the goals where you are not allowed to be inside while throwing the ball into the goals (like hockey)
without any body contact what means that the opponent had to be forced to lose the ball or you had to intercept (the trajectory -Flugbahn)
First the girls had to play with a solid “Faustball” which changed soon into a hollow “Hohlball” so they could bounce the ball.
Handball can be played in halls and outside and until hall handball became famous, it was often played on soccer fields with the soccer goals.
In the evening of the October 29th 1917 the official rules for the game now called handball were laid down and the first official game was played on December 2nd 1917. Two years later duels and body contacts were allowed so the game became more attractive for men.
The first German champion was the TSV Spandau 1921 in field handball.
In the period from 1922 to 1933, the German handball championships were held in parallel by two different associations (German sports authority and German gymnastics), so that there were two German champions for each year.
The first international handball match took place on 13th September 1925 in Halle an der Saale between the men's teams of Germany and Austria. The Austrian selection defeated Germany 6: 3.
In 1928, the first international handball federation IAHF(“International Amateur Handball Ferderation”) was founded by 11 countries: USA, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Austria, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and Germany as part of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam.
The history of the floor covering changed trough the years, first it was cement with a PVC- layer but now it was changed to parquet which is springier. This led to fewer injuries.
One of these heavy injuries happened on the 30th March in 1979:
After a collision the 25-year-old Joachim Deckarm laid on the floor and was treated. "The Jo is tough, he will be back soon," thought his teammates from VfL Gummersbach, who made their semi- final rematch against Banyasz Tatabánya in the European Cup. This was also the first thought of Heiner Brand, captain of the team.
But Deckarm did not get up. And when they heard the reactions of their goalkeeper Valentin Markser, a prospective doctor, and the physiotherapist Günter Wrona, they became aware of "how bad it .....
