Chapter
1 – 11 Summary
Chapter 1:
Will Freeman is 36 and he
never had a job, because he became rich from his father’s Christmas Song. Nevertheless
he writes letter of application and he read a lot. His hobbies are cooking,
travelling, running and reading. He likes to have lots of girlfriends but his
relationships were very short. He hates children, although he goes to a baby
party by John and Christine.
Marcus is 12, this Age in
it problematic, but even more so when one has just moved to London and now in
new school needs, where he has problems. And if you have Fiona as a mother,
nothing about pop music or even keeps brand clothes. Marcus is shy, unwell and
strange.
Chapter 2:
Will meet a girl Angie
and starts a conservation. Angie is a single mum with two children. She want go
out with Will. Unfortunately, the relationship ends after only six weeks. So,
wants to get Will into a single group to know single mums.
Marcus mum Fiona cries
very often. Marcus has problems with bullying, because his class doesn’t like
him. His only friend is separated from him.
Will goes to the next
meeting of SPAT (single parents alone together). He meets Suzie and spent the
evening with her. He told her about his son Ned, but Ned isn’t real.
Marcus goes to his dad to
Cambridge at the weekend. His mum cries all the time. Suzie is Fiona’s best
friend.
Chapter 3:
Will wants to go to the
SPAT picnic with Suzie. Marcus, Fiona’s son comes to the picnic, too. Will
doesn’t want to answer questions about his son Ned. Marcus kills a duck,
because he fed it.
Will, Megan (the daughter
of Suzie), Suzie and Marcus go to Marcus home after the SPAT picnic. Marcus mum
try to kill herself. They call the ambulance. Fiona lives and Marcus stays by
Suzie.
Chapter 4:
Marcus reads a sad letter
about his mum killing herself, in the kitchen. He talks to his mum, because he
is angry of his mum killing herself.
Wills wants to help
Marcus and Fiona and he will meet them Saturday. On Saturday Marcus wants that
Will and Fiona talk to each other. But Fiona isn’t Will’s type of woman. Now,
Will helps them with the situation many days.
Marcus comes to Will’s
flat and fined out that he hasn’t got a child. He wants to make a couple of his
mum and Will.
Chapter 5:
Marcus meets Will very
often after school and they like each other. He goes to Will because he is sad
about his mum. Marcus is often bullying by others, but Will try to help him
with the problems. He wants to change Marcus look. He buys
him some new trainers,
but they are stolen the next day at school. Fiona finds out about the visits
and the imaginary son and forbids Marcus to see Will again. Will shows Fiona
Marcus problems and she doesn’t believe.
Chapter 6:
Will meets Fiona to
discuss about Marcus, because he thinks Marcus need a father figure. Marcus
mustn’t go to Will again.
Marcus talks with the
head teacher about bullying and his trainers, but she wasn’t helpful. He meets
Ellie one of the school’s rebels and a big Kurt Cobain fan. He wells gets on
with Zoe the best friend of Ellie and Ellie. They get friends.
Chapter 7:
Marcus invites Will to
his house for Christmas.
Will hates Christmas but
he goes reluctantly. At first, he has a good time but then Suzie arrives and
she gets angry because Will had lied to her about having a son.
Everybody is angry with
him.
Chapter 8:
Will meets a new girl at
a New Years Eve party, her name is Rachel. He falls in love. Will tells her
that Marcus is his son; he thinks it is more interesting to her. Rachel also
has a twelve year old son called Ali and she invites Will and Marcus to her
house to meet him. Marcus agrees to pretend to be Will’s son. Ali doesn’t want
that his mum go out with Will and he is angry that Will likes Rachel. Marcus
gets problems with Ali but Will explain that and Marcus and Ali become friends.
Chapter 9:
Will wants to spend his
life with Rachel and he tells her the truth about Marcus. Fortunately Rachel is
not angry.
Marcus mum Fiona cries
again. Will should speak with her but he doesn’t want.
But he feels bad and he
asks Rachel for advice and she talks with Fiona, because Will wants to help
Marcus with Fiona.
Chapter 10:
Marcus and Ellie meet his
father in Cambridge, because Fiona means that Clive has broken his arm. The day
they travel, Ellie hearts that Kurt Cobain kills himself, she is sad and wants
to get drink.
Will meets Fiona in a pub
for a talk and she cries. On the answer machine is a message of Marcus, who is
in trouble.
Ellie jumps off the train
and throws her boot through the window of a music shop that has a big cardboard
figure of Kurt Cobain inside.
Chapter 11:
A police car took Marcus
and Ellie to the police station. Ellie’s mum, Marcus father Clive, Clive’s
girlfriend Lindsey, Fiona and Will come to the police station.
Ellie is forced to meet
the owner of the shop and she apologises. Marcus speak with his dad a long time
and Clive excuses for being a bad father, but Marcus tells him it is not bad. Marcus
now knows he has people and he can cope. In short, he has grown up.
Will, meanwhile, realises
that Rachel has changed his life completely and for the first time he gets
seriously involved with somebody, responsibilities and all.
